The Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Lagos State chapter, Mr Akeem Wolimoh, has praised the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his support to military veterans over the years.
Wolimoh told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that the governor donated N125 million in support of the Nigerian Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in the past two years.
“Two years ago, Sanwo-Olu donated N50 million, last year, he donated N75 million, and he has promised to give us N100 million this year.
“Also, he has provided us with 500 bags of 25kg rice which we have taken delivery of and will be distributed to our members in due time,” the chairman said.
NAN reports that the Nigerian Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, formerly known as Nigerian Armed Forces Rememberance Day, is celebrated on Jan. 15 every year.
Wolimoh said that President Bola Tinubu changed the narrative of the Nigerian Armed Forces Rememberance Day to also include the celebration of those actively in service.
“Therefore, we are also celebrating those who are in active service. We are taking a day off to appreciate their efforts and role in the society.
“We are also remembering those who have fallen either during active service whom we refer to as fallen heroes and those who died after having served,” he said.
The chairman said that the significance of the celebration had been impactful in raising funds for the legion especially through the sale of emblems.
He also added that the day celebration threw more light on the need to care for the family of the fallen heroes, catering for the needs of the widows and children they left behind.
“If it was not for the celebration, there will be no emblem launch. The emblem is a symbol and an instrument through which the veterans generate funds.
“It is expected that every year, this emblem is launched by the President, which is simultaneously replicated by all the state governors, as well as at the local government levels.
“This process definitely raises funds for the legion, even if the legion in that place is not active enough to be generating revenue on its own,” Wolimoh said.
The chairman thanked every individual and organisation who supports the Nigerian Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day because of the benefits to the veterans. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
