The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to deepening defence cooperation with the United States as both countries seek to strengthen collaboration in tackling terrorism, violent extremism and other security threats.
This commitment was reiterated by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, during a courtesy visit by the United States Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Mr. Frank Garcia, to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, the CDS described the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United States as one built on mutual respect, shared democratic values and a common commitment to regional and global peace and security.
Edosa acknowledged the United States’ continued support to Nigeria in military training, intelligence sharing, counterterrorism operations and institutional development, noting that the evolving security challenges across Africa require stronger international cooperation.
He said strategic partnerships remain critical to addressing terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime and other emerging security threats, expressing confidence that the visit would further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation and expand collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
The Defence Headquarters, he added, remains committed to professional excellence, regional stability and sustained engagement aimed at promoting lasting peace and security in Nigeria and across the African continent.
In his remarks, the United States Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Mr. Frank Garcia, appreciated the warm reception accorded his delegation and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Nigeria.
Garcia described Nigeria as a key partner in promoting peace, stability and security in West Africa and across the continent, commending the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their efforts in combating terrorism and other security challenges.
He assured the Defence Headquarters of continued United States support through enhanced defence cooperation, security assistance and sustained strategic dialogue.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the meeting also provided both countries the opportunity to exchange views on prevailing regional security issues and explore additional areas of defence collaboration in pursuit of shared security objectives.
