‎Nigeria’s political, diplomatic and business elite are expected to converge on Abuja this weekend to honour former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, as he marks his 84th birthday and unveils three landmark books documenting his life, leadership and contributions to nation-building.

‎The event, themed “The Legacy of a Statesman,” is scheduled to hold on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

‎Organisers said the celebration is designed to recognise General Abdulsalami Abubakar for his enduring contributions to peacebuilding, democratic governance, national unity and public service, while preserving the values and ideals that have defined his distinguished career.

‎According to the Organising Committee, the event will bring together eminent Nigerians, policymakers, diplomats, academics, traditional rulers, captains of industry, civil society leaders and international guests to celebrate a statesman widely regarded as one of the architects of Nigeria’s democratic transition.

‎General Abdulsalami is credited with overseeing the successful transition from military rule to democratic governance in 1999, a milestone that laid the foundation for Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic journey. His role in conflict resolution, dialogue and mediation efforts across Africa has also earned him widespread respect on the continent and beyond.

‎A major highlight of the occasion will be the public presentation of three landmark books that chronicle his life, leadership philosophy, commitment to nation-building and influence on governance and peace initiatives in Africa.

‎The event will also feature tributes from national and international leaders, reflections on leadership and patriotism, and the unveiling of the Abdulsalami Abubakar African Resource Centre (AAARC), a new institution expected to promote knowledge-sharing, leadership development and policy engagement.

‎President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will attend as Special Guest of Honour, while former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, will serve as Chairman of the Occasion.

‎Former South African President Thabo Mbeki is expected to deliver the keynote address, with former Nigerian Presidents, former Vice Presidents and leading entrepreneurs also billed to grace the event.

‎Organisers noted that beyond celebrating General Abdulsalami’s personal milestones, the gathering will provide a platform for national reflection on the qualities required for sustainable peace, democratic consolidation and inclusive development.

‎”As Nigeria continues to navigate complex national and global challenges, the life and legacy of General Abdulsalami Abubakar offer timeless lessons in humility, courage, consensus-building and commitment to the common good,” the committee stated.

‎The celebration is expected to serve as an intergenerational forum where leaders and citizens alike can draw inspiration from the values of integrity, statesmanship, patriotism and servant leadership embodied by the elder statesman.

‎With distinguished guests expected from across Nigeria and the international community, the occasion promises to be a fitting tribute to one of the nation’s most respected leaders and enduring symbols of unity, peace and democratic progress.
