“Nigeria happened to me” – Businesswoman recounts how she was almost jailed over SIM card linked to ₦50m ransom

A Nigerian businesswoman has shared a terrifying experience of how she was almost sent to prison after being linked to a kidnapping case involving a ₦50 million ransom.

In an interview with BBC Yoruba circulating on X (formerly Twitter), she explained that the incident began when a supposed customer contacted her to purchase nightwear—only for things to take a shocking turn during delivery.

“It happened that on October 16, 2025, a number texted my business line asking for nightwear. She picked two and said she was using her husband’s phone because hers was faulty. Later, they said they would come pick it up, so I gave them my estate junction location,” she said.

According to her, upon meeting the supposed customer, two individuals approached her, identified themselves as police officers, and immediately placed her under arrest over a SIM card allegedly linked to a serious crime.

Despite explaining that the SIM card was newly purchased and used only for her business MiFi, the officers insisted she had been under surveillance in connection with a kidnapping and murder case that occurred before she even bought the line.

“They claimed the line was used for kidnapping, ₦50m ransom was collected, and the victim was still killed. I told them I bought the SIM in April 2025, while the incident happened in January 2024.

Even after confirming it at the network office, they still didn’t believe me. They harassed me and almost sent me to prison for what I know nothing about,” she concluded.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing shock and concern.

Some warned against buying pre-registered SIM cards, while others highlighted fears about how innocent people can become entangled in serious criminal investigations.
