NDC to Delta govt: You can’t silence opposition with intimidation

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the sealing of the business premises of Amb. Tobore Alex Agbah, who organised a recent political march in Ughelli, Delta State.

The opposition party alleged that the action was politically motivated, accusing the Delta State Government of attempting to intimidate citizens involved in opposition activities.

Agbah reportedly organised a large-scale march in Ughelli focused on issues including hunger, insecurity and poor infrastructure, while also expressing support for the political alliance involving Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and the NDC.

The party said the premises were sealed by the Ughelli North Local Government authorities after the march.

The development was also highlighted by Dr Christopher Ominimini Obiuwevbi, an NDC House of Representatives candidate, who raised concerns over the alleged action in a video that circulated online.

Reacting to the development in a statement on Sunday, the NDC described the sealing of Agbah’s office as an attempt to punish him for exercising his constitutional rights.

The party argued that political disagreement should not result in the harassment or targeting of opposition members.

“The Delta State Government has once again shown that it cannot tolerate opposition. A government confident of its record does not seal offices, harass organisers, or try to frighten people off the streets,” the party stated.

The NDC further alleged that the action was evidence of growing political tension ahead of the 2027 elections, claiming that no amount of intimidation would stop citizens from expressing their political preferences.

The party called on the Inspector-General of Police to ensure adequate protection for opposition members across Delta State and prevent the police from being used to suppress lawful political activities.

It also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take action against any political actor or party found to be intimidating or obstructing opposition groups.

According to the NDC, elections cannot be regarded as free and credible if political offices are sealed and individuals are targeted for mobilising supporters.

The party urged its members to remain committed to peaceful political engagement, insisting that it would continue to defend the rights of its members to freedom of association and peaceful assembly.

“We will not surrender the civic space to fear,” the NDC declared.
