According to a report by The Sun on Friday, March 27, 2026, a former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism in Niger State, Jonathan Vatsa, who is also a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has cautioned the party against considering the adoption of a Muslim-Muslim ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that such a move could have negative consequences for its electoral prospects.
He made this position known while addressing journalists in Minna in preparation for the party’s forthcoming national convention.
Vatsa, who previously served as the publicity secretary of the APC in Niger State, expressed concerns that the political realities in the country have shifted significantly since the last general elections.
According to him, the dynamics that influenced the outcome of the 2023 elections are no longer the same, noting that strategies that appeared effective at that time may not produce similar results in the future.
He pointed out that relying on the same approach could weaken the party’s standing among voters across different regions.
Vatsa emphasized that the prevailing political environment requires a more inclusive and carefully balanced strategy, particularly in a diverse country where religious and regional considerations often play a role in electoral outcomes.
He suggested that failing to adapt to changing circumstances could create openings for rival political parties.
He further indicated that opposition groups are likely to take advantage of any perceived imbalance or controversial decision in the party’s ticket arrangement.
This, he noted, could provide them with an opportunity to mobilize support and challenge the APC more effectively during the next election cycle.
The APC chieftain recalled how political strategies have been used in the past to unseat ruling parties, stressing that similar tactics could be deployed again if the party does not reassess its approach.
He maintained that careful planning and sensitivity to national sentiments would be essential in maintaining the party’s competitiveness.
“If that experiment worked in 2023, it will no longer work in 2027. The opposition will capitalise on that to create upset like we did to PDP in 2015.”
