Mixed Reactions As Peter Obi Breaks Silence On The Continuous Detention Of Malami And El-Rufai

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over what he described as the persecution of political opponents under the current administration.

Obi made the remarks in a statement posted on his official account on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, March 9, 2026, where he called for adherence to the rule of law and expressed concern over recent developments involving opposition political figures.

In the statement, Obi said the government must end actions that he described as targeting political opponents under the guise of criminal prosecution.

He also referenced the recent arrests and continued detention of political figures associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Obi further commented on the manner of their arrest and the legal procedures involved in the cases. The former presidential candidate also expressed concern over the handling of El-Rufai’s case, particularly regarding the agencies involved in his custody.

Obi said Nigeria requires a justice system that guarantees fairness and protects citizens from persecution based on their political views. He added that as the country approaches another election cycle, anti-corruption efforts must be carried out with transparency and fairness.

He wrote; “Time to End the Persecution of Political Opponents. The current administration must put an end to the blatant persecution of political opponents disguised as criminal prosecution. The integrity of the rule of law in Nigeria is non-negotiable; its degradation undermines our economic development and threatens national stability.”See_More…
