Military Neutralises Terrorist Leaders, Rescues Over 100 Victims in Nationwide Operations

The Armed Forces of Nigeria have recorded major operational successes across the country, neutralising terrorist leaders, rescuing kidnapped victims and recovering large quantities of arms between January 1 and 19, 2026.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, disclosed this while briefing journalists on ongoing military operations nationwide.

He said troops, working with other security agencies, conducted coordinated kinetic and non-kinetic operations aimed at strengthening national security and stabilising affected regions.

“Our focus remains the safety of citizens, the disruption of terrorist networks and ensuring that criminal elements are denied freedom of action across the country,” Onoja said.

In the North-East, Onoja said troops of Operation HADIN KAI neutralised scores of Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters, arrested 34 suspects and rescued 17 kidnapped victims.

He revealed that a surrendered terrorist commander and intelligence from a suicide bomber exposed those behind the Gamboru Market Mosque attack.

“Key terrorist leaders were identified, arms were recovered, and networks responsible for suicide attacks were dismantled,” he stated.

Onoja added that troops repelled coordinated attacks on military bases in Adamawa and Borno states without casualties, while airstrikes eliminated fleeing terrorists.

In the North-West, he said Operation FANSAN YAMMA troops neutralised terrorists, arrested suspects and rescued 52 kidnapped victims across multiple states.

“Weapons, vehicles, livestock and other items recovered have been taken into custody for further action,” he said.

In the North-Central, Onoja said operations led to the arrest of kidnappers and extremists, the rescue of victims and the recovery of arms, including AK-47 rifles and grenades linked to a notorious gang.
The military also disrupted oil theft activities in the South-South region.

“Troops foiled oil theft valued at over ₦53.7 million, destroyed illegal refineries and arrested 31 oil thieves,” Onoja disclosed.

In the South-East, he said troops arrested IPOB/ESN members, an arms dealer and dismantled criminal enclaves.

Onoja reaffirmed the military’s commitment to national security.

“The successes recorded are a testament to the determination and professionalism of our troops, who continue to work tirelessly to secure the nation,” he said.
