Manchester United Sack Ruben Amorim After 14 Months in Charge

Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim following growing tensions behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese coach departs after 14 months in the role, with Sunday’s 1–1 draw away at Leeds United proving to be his final match in charge. That result left United sixth in the Premier League, outside the Champions League places.

    • Amorim was dismissed after a meeting on Monday morning with United chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox. Sources indicate that relations between the head coach and the club’s hierarchy had deteriorated in recent weeks, with internal disagreements contributing to the decision.

Sky Sports News reports that the situation had been “building for weeks”, as pressure mounted amid inconsistent performances and concerns over long-term direction.

Former midfielder Darren Fletcher will take temporary charge of the first team and is expected to be on the touchline for Wednesday’s league match away at Burnley.

Amorim was appointed in November 2024 with a reputation for progressive football following his success in Portugal, but struggled to fully impose his philosophy during a turbulent period of transition at the club.

Manchester United are expected to begin the search for a permanent replacement immediately, with the board keen to stabilise results and restore momentum in the second half of the season.
