Man, family declared wanted for filming 2020 #EndSARS shooting

Security operatives have reportedly declared a Nigerian family wanted in connection with the 2020 #EndSARS demonstrations.

According to security sources, the warrant primarily targets Ismail Olanrewaju Soremekun, a civil rights activist accused of recording soldiers allegedly firing at unarmed demonstrators during the October 2020 protests.

Authorities intensify probe into #EndSARS activists

The move is said to be part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to identify those accused of using the protests to instigate violence and property destruction across the country.

Mr Soremekun, whom his wife once described as one of the protest coordinators, allegedly captured a video showing military personnel shooting at civilians at the peak of the #EndSARS movement.

The footage reportedly circulated among activists, drawing the attention of security agencies and leading to his being declared wanted shortly afterwards.

Sources further revealed that the wanted list was later expanded to include his wife, Hannah Olufunke Soremekun, and their children after they allegedly tried to evade arrest.

The family was said to have abandoned their home at No. 14, Oke-Ola Street, Agbowo, Ibadan, before leaving Nigeria on 27 November 2020.

Rights groups raise alarm

Human rights advocates have voiced serious concern over what they describe as the continued harassment of citizens linked to the #EndSARS movement.

They caution that such actions threaten Nigeria’s democratic values and erode fundamental freedoms, particularly the right to peaceful protest and free expression.
