A social media user has criticised former Nigerian international footballer, Emmanuel Emenike, for allegedly threatening Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, over the ongoing demolition of illegal structures in the state.
The controversy began after a post surfaced online showing Emenike’s displeasure with the Lagos State government’s demolition exercise.
The operation, which targets buildings and shops constructed on waterways and unauthorised lands, has generated mixed reactions across the country.
While some residents argue that the move is harsh and inconsiderate, others maintain that it is necessary to restore urban order and prevent flooding.
Criticism over selective outrage
Reacting to Emenike’s reported statement, a user identified as @GoziconC on X (formerly Twitter) lambasted the former Super Eagles striker for what he described as hypocrisy and selective outrage.
He wrote: “Former Footballer, Emmanuel Emenike is threatening Gov. Sanwo-Olu over the demolition of illegal structures in Lagos. This clown has never threatened IPOB over killing of innocent civilians in Southeast.
“Emenike has never threatened Soludo, Otti, and Peter Mbah over the demolition of illegal structures in Southeast. And to worsen it all, he lives in Lagos instead of Southeast.”
..., which has since gone viral, has sparked heated debate among social media users. While some sided with GoziconC, accusing Emenike of being biased, others defended the ex-footballer, arguing that he was simply expressing concern for displaced residents affected by the demolition.
Mixed reactions trail the debate
Many Nigerians have continued to express divided opinions over the Lagos demolition drive.
Supporters of the policy argue that it is part of a long-term plan to modernise cities and ensure safety, while critics insist that it has rendered thousands homeless without adequate resettlement measures.
