A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamu Garba, has supported President Donald Trump’s claim that there is genocide taking place in Nigeria.
Garba expressed his opinion while reacting to the recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the U.S. President.
He stated that, judging by the number of lives lost in violent attacks across the country, the situation can only be described as genocide.
‘The killings are pure genocide’
Speaking on the matter, Garba recalled that in 2014, when the APC was still the opposition party, some of its members visited the White House to seek help over the mass killings happening in Nigeria.
He emphasised that innocent people have continued to die in their homes and communities without protection.
He said: “In 2014, the Nigerian opposition, then in APC, visited the White House seeking help over the genocide happening in Nigeria.
“When you look at the number of people who have been killed across the country, in their villages, sleeping in their homes, defenseless, what else can you call it? It’s nothing but pure genocide.”
However, Garba noted that while he agrees with Trump’s view, it would be inaccurate to describe the crisis as “Christian genocide.” According to him, both Christians and Muslims have suffered and lost lives in the ongoing violence.
