LASU retains West Africa’s top university in global sustainability ranking

Lagos State University (LASU) has retained its position as the Overall Best University in West Africa in the newly released 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking for Sustainability.

Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations said the LASU was confirmed as the best university in both Nigeria and the West Africa region for the fourth consecutive time, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.

In addition to its regional dominance, LASU recorded an impressive advancement in the global standings.

The university moved up 39 places, jumping from 799th position in the 2024 ranking to 760th globally among 1,745 institutions across 105 countries.

The press release noted that this consistent upward trajectory highlights the university’s deepening commitment to sustainability-driven innovation and institutional responsibility since joining the platform in September 2022.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, received the news with pride and congratulated the entire university community for their collective efforts.

She also acknowledged the “invaluable support of the Lagos State Government,” whose investments continue to encourage LASU’s pursuit of global excellence in sustainability initiatives.

LASU also noted that it currently holds the distinction of being the most subscribed university in Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor extended gratitude to key teams involved in the ranking success, including the Special Ranking Committee led by Professor Adenike Boyo, the Directorate of Research Management and Innovation, the Centre for the Actualisation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and the Centre for Planning Studies.
