LASTMA Apprehends Hit-and-Run Driver Following Pedestrian Fatality

A Nissan Jeep, bearing the registration number KJA 354 ET, was intercepted after colliding with a pedestrian and attempting to flee the scene at the Ogudu flyover bridge in Ifako, Lagos.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the general manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday.

Mr. Bakare-Oki detailed that instead of aiding the critically injured pedestrian, the driver audaciously tried to escape. He noted that LASTMA operatives, strategically positioned in the vicinity, responded swiftly and effectively to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

In addition, the officers facilitated the urgent medical assistance and evacuation of the seriously injured pedestrian.

“Regrettably, the injured pedestrian succumbed to their injuries,” stated Mr. Bakare-Oki.

The authority head explained that the accident occurred when the driver, attempting to maneuver around a heavily loaded articulated truck, lost control and struck the unsuspecting pedestrian.

He further mentioned that the suspect was promptly handed over to the Ogudu Police Division, which provided essential law enforcement support for the rescue operation.

“The damaged vehicle was subsequently removed by LASTMA personnel and taken to the Ogudu Police Division for a comprehensive investigation,” Mr. Bakare-Oki added.

He urged motorists to exercise caution, emphasizing that speeding and reckless driving pose significant risks not only to drivers but also to pedestrians and other innocent road users.
