The Lagos State Police Command has ordered a forensic investigation into the death of former Ondo State governorship candidate, Mr. Bamidele Akingboye.
The directive, issued by Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh, followed the circulation of a photograph on social media showing bruises on Akingboye’s head, sparking speculation that his death may not have been natural.
Initial reports had suggested that Akingboye, who died on Wednesday at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos, passed away peacefully. However, the new images have raised questions about the cause of death.
Human rights advocates have urged the police to ensure a transparent and credible investigation.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Sunday, the Lagos State Command confirmed that CP Jimoh had directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to lead the probe.
“The commissioner has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, to discreetly investigate the death,” the command said.
Detectives, supported by the Command’s Crime Scene Investigation vehicle, have since visited Akingboye’s residence. The area has been sealed off as forensic experts deploy specialised tools to collect evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
Akingboye, a former candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), contested the November 2024 Ondo State governorship election but lost to the incumbent, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
