The Nigerian Medical Association has elected Prof. Sharafadeen Kehinde Okunade as its new chairman following the conclusion of its 2026 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections.
Okunade, a professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and a consultant at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), will lead the Lagos State branch of the association for the 2026–2028 term.
The election, conducted on July 28, was supervised by the national leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association under its President, Prof. Akhinde Ernest Omoti. It featured electronic voting following the adoption of amendments to the association’s rules and regulations.
The AGM also approved significant reforms to the Lagos State branch’s bye-laws, including the formal introduction of electronic voting for future elections and the establishment of a Welfare Trust Fund. The amendments were initiated by the outgoing executive led by the immediate past chairman, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed.
The election marked the culmination of activities commemorating the end of the 2024–2026 administration. The programme began on July 27 with an opening ceremony and scientific conference attended by members of the association.
Other officials elected to the State Officers’ Committee for the 2026–2028 term are Dr Moruf Abdulsalam as First Vice Chairman; Dr Olabisi Olanrewaju as Second Vice Chairman; Dr Chinedum Eluogu as Secretary; Dr Olunike Ogundare as Deputy Secretary; Dr Morolayo Kikelomo Onamusi as Treasurer; Dr Adeola Salawu as Publicity Secretary; Dr Korede Hunpatin as Social Secretary; Dr Aishat Bello-Taslim as Financial Secretary; and Dr Olanrewaju Obadeyi as Internal Auditor.
The newly elected executive is expected to steer the affairs of the association over the next two years while building on the institutional reforms introduced by the immediate past administration, particularly those aimed at strengthening internal governance and members’ welfare.
