Police jump fence, break into homes during early morning raid
The incident left residents frightened and confused as officers moved from door to door searching for suspects.
The police team was said to have arrived heavily armed and in large numbers.
According to the resident, the officers claimed they were acting on intelligence suggesting that some occupants of the compound were involved in internet fraud and drug use.
She said the police broke doors, smashed windows and seized personal belongings, including mobile phones and a vehicle belonging to another tenant.
Frequent raids and residents’ complaints
“I was sleeping yesterday morning, very early, when I just heard ba ba ba on the door,” she recalled.
The woman, who said the officers came from Eyeyele Police Station Headquarters, questioned the manner of the operation and the damage caused to property.
“They pushed the barb wire away, flew the tall fence, and came in. They broke my neighbor’s door, broke the window… why? Wetin happen?” she asked, adding that she was so shaken that she temporarily left home.
“I cannot sleep. I just came back today,” she added.
Police raids based on allegations of cybercrime have become increasingly common in several Nigerian cities, with many residents repeatedly accusing security operatives of excessive force, illegal entry and property damage.
