The Kwara State Government has warned residents and road users along Ilorin’s Airport Road to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse, declaring such acts as environmental abuse punishable under state laws.
Jide Aina, General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), issued the warning on Tuesday while participating in a special clean-up exercise along the road. He expressed concern over the area’s persistent misuse, which has effectively turned it into an illegal dumpsite.
Despite the government’s efforts, including the provision of four large Roro bins for proper waste disposal, some residents continue to dump refuse along the roadside. “This is unacceptable and shows clear disregard for our efforts to promote a clean and healthy environment,” Aina said.
He also condemned the open burning of waste, noting that it poses serious health and environmental risks. “Illegal dumping and open burning are criminal offences under Kwara State Environmental Laws and will no longer be tolerated,” he warned.
KWEPA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, has deployed monitoring and enforcement teams to affected areas. Individuals caught violating environmental regulations will be arrested and prosecuted.
Aina urged residents across the state to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and support the government’s sanitation initiatives. “Environmental cleanliness is a collective responsibility and a civic duty essential for public health and sustainable development,” he said.
The clean-up exercise drew participation from senior government officials, including the Commissioner for Environment and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, highlighting the state’s commitment to maintaining a safe and environmentally friendly city.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Kwara State Government to restore cleanliness along major roads and public spaces, while ensuring compliance with environmental laws.
Officials emphasized that continued public cooperation is critical to sustaining these efforts and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility across the state.
KWEPA reiterated its readiness to enforce the law and protect residents from the adverse effects of pollution and improper waste management.
