The Kwankwasiyya Movement has cautioned that Nigeria’s democracy faces serious risks from opportunistic defections and the overwhelming dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a press statement, the group’s spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, condemned the rapid passage and presidential assent to amendments of the Electoral Act, calling it contrary to public opinion and civil society advocacy.
“The mandate belongs to the electorate, not the personal convenience of officeholders. Defections without ideological justification or constituency consultation amount to a distortion of democratic representation,” Dr. Mohammed stated.
The Movement pointed out that the APC’s stronghold across the Executive and the National Assembly undermines legislative independence, weakens opposition, and reduces checks on executive proposals, regardless of public sentiment.
Kwankwasiyya urged Nigerians to remain alert and engaged, insisting that political pluralism and respect for electoral mandates are essential to safeguard democratic vitality.
“The concentration of power without effective counterbalance risks sidelining the voice of the electorate. Democracy belongs to the people and must not be compromised by convenience,” the statement concluded.
