Kidnappers Demand N200m Ransom for Two Brothers Abducted in Edo

Gunmen

Gunmen have demanded a N200 million ransom for the release of two brothers, Ibrahim and Tahir Abu, who were kidnapped in Auchi, Edo State, on January 2.

Their father, Momoh Tahir, confirmed the development on Sunday, saying the abductors contacted the family shortly after the incident. He disclosed that following negotiations, the ransom was reduced to N100 million, with hopes that further talks would lead to another reduction.

“They have been in touch with us since the kidnapping. They initially demanded N200 million, but we negotiated it down to N100 million. We are still hopeful that further discussions will reduce the amount,” he said.

Describing the situation as distressing, Tahir added, “It’s a trying period for the family, but I pray they return home safely.”

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the abduction. The Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said the incident was reported at about 8:30 pm on January 2, prompting the immediate deployment of security operatives.

According to her, the Divisional Police Officer in Auchi mobilised officers in collaboration with vigilantes, forest guards, and community safety volunteers familiar with the terrain. She added that intensive search-and-rescue operations were ongoing and assured the public that efforts would continue until the victims are rescued.

“Further developments will be communicated as events unfold,” she said.

Ibrahim Abu is currently undergoing his housemanship at the Edo State Teaching Hospital, Auchi. A family source said he was abducted in front of his residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, while attempting to open his gate after returning from work.

“This is deeply disturbing and unacceptable. A young doctor whose only crime is serving humanity has become another victim of insecurity,” the source said, calling on security agencies and the Edo State Government to ensure the brothers’ safe and unconditional release.

Recall that in a previous incident, two brothers, Isaac and Victor Olayere, kidnapped along Adughe-Imoga Road on November 8, were rescued after their abductors reportedly fell asleep. The kidnappers had demanded a N22 million ransom before the victims escaped.
