Kano Governor Appoints New Statistician-General

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has appointed Dr. Suraj Sulaiman as the new Statistician-General and Director-General of the Kano State Bureau of Statistics. The appointment takes immediate effect, according to a statement released on Monday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature.

The appointment follows the completion of the tenure of the former Statistician-General, Associate Professor Aliyu Isa Aliyu, who was recently elevated to the position of Commissioner for Livestock Development. Governor Yusuf has directed that an official handover and taking-over ceremony be conducted between Monday and Friday this week.

Dr. Sulaiman is an accomplished academic and mathematician with extensive experience in research, teaching, and statistical analysis. He earned a PhD in Mathematics from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2015–2018), completing a doctoral thesis titled “New Method of Computing the Projective Polynomial Resultant Based on Dixon, Jouanolou and Jacobian Matrices.”

He also holds a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Yasar University, Turkey (2012–2014), and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil (2006–2010). He began his tertiary education at the College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies, Kano, where he obtained a Diploma in Mathematics Education (2004–2006).

In his congratulatory message, Governor Yusuf praised Dr. Sulaiman for his well-deserved appointment, noting that his academic and professional background will strengthen the Bureau’s capacity for effective service delivery.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to data-driven governance, emphasizing that reliable statistics are vital for planning, transparency, and sustainable development in Kano State.

Dr. Sulaiman’s appointment is expected to support the state’s ongoing efforts to enhance statistical operations and improve evidence-based policy-making across various sectors.

The Bureau of Statistics plays a critical role in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data to inform government decisions and developmental initiatives in Kano State.

Governor Yusuf’s directive for a formal handover underscores the administration’s focus on a smooth transition and continuity in statistical services.
