Kano cracks down on ‘immoral’ social media content

Court

A Magistrate Court in Kano has ordered the remand of popular TikToker, Ashiru Idris, known as Mai Wushirya, for allegedly posting indecent videos involving a dwarf woman on social media. Presiding Judge Halima Wali of Court No. 7 directed that Idris be kept in a correctional facility for two weeks pending further hearing.

Officials of the Kano State Censorship Board had earlier arrested Idris after clips showing him shirtless and engaging in what authorities described as “immoral and demeaning acts” went viral. The board’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, confirmed that the court also ordered the appearance of the woman featured in the video, who is believed to have fled to Zamfara State.

Sulaiman noted that efforts are ongoing to locate her before the next hearing. The Kano State Government has recently intensified its crackdown on content creators accused of promoting immorality or violating censorship laws, leading to several arrests among TikTokers and entertainers in the state.
