JUST IN: Rashidi Ladoja officially crowned 44th Olubadan

Former Oyo State Governor, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has been officially crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The coronation, which took place on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Mapo Hall, drew thousands of residents, visitors, and dignitaries.

Earlier in the day, the 81-year-old monarch received the traditional Akoko leaf at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, and was crowned at the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East before proceeding to Mapo Hall for the presentation of the staff and instrument of office by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Dignitaries and Cultural Display

The event attracted prominent figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III.

Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), and Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo) were also present.

The atmosphere in Ibadan was electrified by cultural performances, colourful Yoruba attires, and the beats of traditional drums.

Popular Fuji star Taye Currency entertained the crowd as Oba Ladoja arrived at Mapo Hall at 11:42 a.m., welcomed with thunderous applause.

A Monarch with Political Stature

Oba Ladoja’s ascension is historic as he becomes the first former governor to occupy the Olubadan stool.

His journey began in the 1980s when he became Mogaji, and later Jagun Olubadan on October 1, 1993.

The succession system of the Olubadan remains one of Nigeria’s most structured, allowing promotion step by step through alternating chieftaincy lines until the most senior emerges as Olubadan.

This transition follows the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, in July 2025.
