Adebayo Adelabu, Nigeria’s Minister of Power, has announced plans to resign from the cabinet of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the coming days to contest the Oyo State governorship seat. The decision follows a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Adelabu formally presented his intention alongside a report of his stewardship.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser, Tunji Bolaji, the Minister delayed his resignation to focus on stabilising the power sector and ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms. Key concerns included recent declines in electricity generation caused by gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs, and outstanding payments to gas suppliers.
During the meeting, Adelabu highlighted achievements recorded under his leadership, including efforts to boost electricity generation, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and improve efficiency across the sector. He also presented key policy frameworks such as the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), aimed at guiding long-term sector reforms.
The NIEP outlines a roadmap for sustainable development of Nigeria’s electricity sector, focusing on energy security, expanded access, renewable energy integration, and system resilience. Its implementation plan details actionable steps, timelines, and responsibilities to drive improvements across generation, transmission, distribution, and regulatory processes.
President Tinubu commended Adelabu’s performance and acknowledged the progress made in laying a solid policy foundation for the power sector. He also granted the Minister approval and support to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
