A human rights activist and convener of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, Omoyele Sowore, has reportedly been re-arrested by officers of the Nigerian Police Force shortly after being granted bail by a court.
According to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, over fifty police officers stormed the area and violently took Sowore away soon after his release order was issued.
Lawyers Question Police Conduct
Adeyanju said the police refused to show any valid remand or arrest order. “More than 50 police officers violently attacked him [Omoyele Sowore] and took him again by force,” he stated.
He explained that when his legal team demanded to see an arrest warrant, one of the officers only flashed a letter briefly before putting it back in his pocket. “We couldn’t even read what was written on it,” Adeyanju said.
He added that a police officer claimed Sowore insulted the Inspector-General of Police by calling him “useless,” which allegedly led to his rough re-arrest. According to reports, Sowore’s clothes were torn as he was dragged away to Kuje Prison.
Arrest Follows Bail Ruling
The incident happened just after a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Kuje, Abuja, granted bail to Sowore, Aloy Ejimakor (lawyer to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu), and eleven others arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.
The court had admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of ₦500,000 each, with two sureties in like amount. They were accused of inciting public disturbance and breaching public peace during Monday’s protest in Abuja.
Before his re-arrest, Sowore had appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 23 to show solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing terrorism charges.
