Jeff Bezos Nears $6B Liverpool Deal Weeks After First Buzz

Jeff Bezos‘ reported push into Premier League ownership appears to be moving closer to reality, weeks after he was first linked to a multibillion-dollar investment in Liverpool. The businessman is now said to be nearing a deal alongside other billionaire investors for a roughly one-third stake in the English club.

If completed, the arrangement would also bring immense financial muscle to Anfield, with Bezos and co-investor Eduardo Saverin worth more than $300 billion combined.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly closing in on a major investment in Liverpool FC as part of a billionaire-backed consortium seeking a minority stake in the Premier League club.

According to Sky News, the group is negotiating to acquire roughly one-third of Liverpool from controlling shareholder Fenway Sports Group (FSG). The consortium is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.

Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is also part of the investor group. A deal could value Liverpool at around £4.4 billion ($6 billion), with an announcement potentially coming within days.

FSG, which has controlled Liverpool since buying the club for £300 million in 2010, acknowledged the approach last month. The company said Bhatia’s consortium had expressed interest in making a “strategic minority investment” in the club.

These latest developments come less than three weeks after reports first emerged that Bezos was being linked to a possible move into English football.

At the time, the Amazon founder’s involvement was far from certain. Neither Bezos nor Bhatia had publicly confirmed the reports, while Sky News’ Mark Kleinman cautioned that negotiations remained at a “relatively early stage.”

Still, Kleinman predicted that Bezos would likely end up participating if the proposed transaction made it across the line.

However, the report also highlighted some resistance to the prospect of Bezos entering the Premier League. Several social media users criticized the growing influence of wealthy American investors in English football, with one arguing that the sport needed “more fan ownership.”

Should the transaction go through, Liverpool would gain investors with some of the deepest pockets in world business.

Forbes currently estimates Bezos’ fortune at $278.7 billion, ranking him as the world’s third-richest person. Saverin brings considerable wealth of his own, with the Meta co-founder’s net worth sitting at $33.4 billion.

That puts the two men’s combined fortunes above $312 billion, more than 50 times the reported $6 billion valuation attached to Liverpool in the proposed transaction. Saverin also co-founded venture capital firm B Capital, which manages more than $12 billion in assets.

The potential investment comes amid significant changes behind the scenes at Liverpool, including the recent departure of FSG’s CEO of Football, Michael Edwards.

Edwards stepped down in July, just over two years after returning to the organization with responsibilities extending beyond Liverpool. FSG described his exit as a “planned transition,” while reports said he had informed the ownership of his intention to leave in autumn 2025.

A major attraction of Edwards’ return was the opportunity to help develop FSG’s wider soccer ambitions. However, plans to build a multi-club operation failed to materialize despite around 25 European teams reportedly being assessed, per Sky.

Edwards acknowledged that the broader project had developed differently from what was initially envisioned. His departure ended more than 15 years with Liverpool and FSG, across two spells.

Meanwhile, Liverpool is heading into the new European season with several unresolved squad issues, most notably the search for a natural successor to Mohamed Salah on the right.

Teenagers Joshua Abe and Rio Ngumoha have started there during preseason, while reported marquee target Bradley Barcola has spent most of his career operating from the opposite flank.

The situation is complicated by injuries. Conor Bradley remains sidelined following knee surgery, while star striker Hugo Ekitike is months away from returning after rupturing his Achilles tendon. Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an ACL tear, and Joe Gomez is expected to miss the beginning of the season with a muscle injury.

Head coach Andoni Iraola acknowledged in July that Liverpool had “obvious situations” to address in the transfer market.
