Ivorian president Ouattara, 83, wins fourth presidential term

Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara has won a second term in office after securing the 2025 presidential election.

He secured a fourth term in office after winning the 2025 presidential election with a commanding 89.77% of the votes, according to provisional results released by the Independent Electoral Commission (CIE) on Monday evening.

The 83-year-old leader reportedly received 3.75 million votes, while his closest rival, businessman Jean-Louis Billon, trailed far behind with only 3.09%.

Voter turnout statistics

Voter turnout stood at 50.1%, reflecting moderate participation across the West African nation.

The CIE noted that Monday’s results remain provisional, as the Constitutional Council is expected to confirm the final outcome after reviewing any petitions or disputes arising from the election.

Opposition parties reject outcome

Meanwhile, opposition parties led by former President Laurent Gbagbo and politician Tidjane Thiam have rejected the outcome, describing the process as a “civilian coup d’état.”

They have vowed not to recognise Ouattara’s victory, accusing the electoral body of bias and irregularities.

Ouattara, who first came to power in 2011 following Gbagbo’s arrest after the disputed 2010 polls, was initially limited to two terms.

However, a 2016 constitutional amendment reset term limits, enabling him to seek re-election in 2020, a vote boycotted by the opposition, and now again in 2025.
