An Islamic scholar has highlighted the distinction between child spacing and permanent birth limitation in Islam during a World Contraception Day event in Kwara State.
Speaking at the commemoration of World Contraception Day, observed annually on September 26 to promote awareness of contraception, family planning and reproductive health, Sheikh Muhammad Dare Garba Alfulani said Islam permits married couples to space pregnancies for legitimate reasons.
Alfulani represented the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Dasuki, at the event organised by the Kwara State Ministry of Health, led by the Commissioner for Health, Alhaja Dr Amina Ahmad El-Imam.
The event brought together health-sector stakeholders, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other guests to discuss family planning, reproductive health and the wellbeing of families and communities.
In his remarks, Alfulani said the Islamic position favours child spacing rather than child limitation.
According to him, married couples may regulate the intervals between births where there is a legitimate need or valid reason, provided the practice remains consistent with Islamic principles.
He, however, distinguished this from permanently restricting or completely preventing childbearing without legitimate justification.
Alfulani said the distinction was important to understanding Islam’s approach to family planning, particularly as discussions around reproductive health continue among religious and health-sector stakeholders.
