U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a major press briefing after meeting with leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis. He discussed several global issues, including Venezuelan elections, Iran’s missile program, the Ukraine conflict, Cuba’s oil situation, and nuclear arms talks with China and Russia.
In an interview aired by DWS News, Rubio underscored that the United States has “no artificial timeline” for elections in Venezuela as the country moves toward democratic processes under interim authorities.
On Iran, Rubio raised alarms about its missile capabilities and broader threats, noting that Tehran’s weapon developments could strike U.S. bases in the region. He stated, “They possess thousands of short‑range ballistic missiles that can reach US bases located in the region.” This message reflects Washington’s growing concern about Iranian military ambitions amid stalled nuclear negotiations.
Rubio also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, stressing that the conflict “has no military solution” and emphasizing the need for diplomacy and sustained international support. He argued that any lasting peace will require political agreement rather than continued fighting.
The CARICOM talks also touched on regional security and economic issues, including Cuba’s humanitarian challenges resulting from tighter oil restrictions and the United States’ position on Cuba’s government. While Rubio stopped short of detailing specific Cuba policy changes, he highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and stability.See_More…
