Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader following a decision by the powerful Assembly of Experts, according to Iranian state media reports.
The appointment comes after the death of Ali Khamenei, who had led the Islamic Republic since 1989 and was reportedly killed during recent U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Mojtaba Khamenei, a 56-year-old cleric with close ties to Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), had long been viewed by segments of the Iranian political establishment as a potential successor to his father.
The selection marks a historic moment for Iran’s political system as it represents the first father-to-son succession since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979, raising concerns among analysts that the country may be drifting toward a dynastic leadership model.
Although Mojtaba has never held an elected government position, he has wielded considerable influence behind the scenes for years, acting as a key adviser within his father’s office and maintaining strong relationships with conservative clerics and security institutions.
His rise to power comes at a time of intense geopolitical tension in the Middle East. The ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States has already triggered major disruptions across the region, including missile strikes, attacks on energy infrastructure and growing threats to shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Global markets have reacted sharply to the unfolding crisis with oil prices surging significantly due to fears of supply disruptions from the Middle East, a region responsible for a large share of the world’s crude exports.
Analysts say Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership could signal a continuation of Iran’s hardline political and foreign policy stance, particularly toward the United States and Israel, while further entrenching the influence of the Revolutionary Guards within the country’s power structure.
The Assembly of Experts, a clerical body responsible for selecting and overseeing Iran’s supreme leader, typically moves quickly to ensure continuity of leadership during times of crisis.
With Mojtaba Khamenei now at the helm, Iran enters a new phase of leadership amid one of the most volatile geopolitical environments the region has faced in decades.
