INEC: Osun, Imo Lead New Registrants

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday announced that 2,316,232 Nigerians have newly registered to vote across the country, with significant differences among the states. Osun State recorded the highest number of new registrants.

INEC noted that voter registration in Anambra State remains suspended until after the November 8, 2025 governorship election, in compliance with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022. As a result, the state is not included in the latest figures.

The updated numbers reflect both online and physical registrations completed during Week 12 of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, and will run until August 2026.

Osun led with 185,089 new registrants, followed by Imo with 143,386 and Kano with 132,290. Other top-performing states include Sokoto (123,320), Lagos (109,693), the Federal Capital Territory (106,855), and Borno (106,376).

Additional figures show Kogi with 91,573 new voters, Jigawa with 88,209, Zamfara with 84,268, Katsina with 80,425, and Kaduna with 78,282. Kebbi registered 74,159, Delta 72,311, and Ogun 71,091. Niger recorded 69,739; Akwa Ibom, 65,446; and Oyo, 64,561.

Rivers registered 57,251, followed by Benue (42,557), Bayelsa (38,627), and Bauchi (36,166). Ekiti, Gombe, and Nasarawa recorded 32,096, 31,542, and 30,348 respectively, while Ebonyi posted 28,310; Edo, 27,130; and Plateau, 24,077. Taraba had 17,803; Enugu, 16,304; Ondo, 16,012; Cross River, 14,559; and Abia, 12,297.

INEC added that the South-West, particularly Osun and Lagos, continues to post strong registration numbers, while the northern states are experiencing increased turnout due to intensified mobilisation by local authorities, religious leaders, and community groups.
