“In the US, we encourage people to wear camouflage” – Nigerian man in US army tells Peller

A Nigerian serving in the United States Army, speaking with Peller, criticised the restrictions of civilians wearing camouflage, saying the rule reflects outdated mindsets about military apparel in the country.

He made this known in a viral video that trended on X.

Civilians and Camouflage

The soldier, who spoke with Peller, contrasted the Nigerian approach with practices in the United States, where civilians are encouraged to wear military-inspired clothing as a form of support and potential motivation to join the armed forces.

He argued that such openness strengthens public–military relations rather than creating unnecessary restrictions.

His comments followed trending videos showing security personnel confronting civilians for wearing camouflage.

Camouflage shouldn’t be outlawed

The US-based soldier noted that encouraging people to freely wear such clothing does not diminish respect for the military but can instead foster pride, interest, and positive engagement among young people. He maintained that Nigeria’s current practices contribute to harassment rather than national security.

He said in part …

“In the U.S. Army, we don’t ha rass people for wearing camo. Instead we encourage them to wear it so they can get inspired to join the force. Nigeria really needs to change.”
