According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Senator Seriake Dickson, National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has dismissed allegations that the party is acting as a proxy for the ruling All Progressives Congress, describing the claim as baseless.
In a statement released in Abuja, Dickson said the newly registered political party emerged through due process and should be regarded as an independent platform with its own structure and objectives. He stressed that the party’s registration was not tied to any covert arrangement or political agenda designed to benefit another party.
The senator representing Bayelsa West also responded to concerns about the legality of the party’s registration, insisting that there was no controversy surrounding the process. He explained that all necessary procedures were followed and that the registration complied with the relevant legal directives guiding the formation of political parties.
Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State, described the narratives questioning the party’s legitimacy as misleading and unnecessary. He maintained that the circumstances surrounding the party’s approval were clear and sufficient to counter the claims being circulated.
He further denied suggestions that either the Independent National Electoral Commission or the APC was planning to challenge the party in court. According to him, there is no factual basis for such assertions, nor is there any known legal action against the party’s status.
The former governor also rejected claims that the party was created to divide opposition forces or cause confusion within the political landscape. He said such interpretations were incorrect and unsupported by the facts surrounding the party’s formation.
“I’m used to this kind of bullying tactics. I am not someone who is swayed by propaganda and blackmail,” he added.
