‘I’m safe but still locked up” – Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer speaks from Kuje prison

Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, has broken his silence following his arrest during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja, confirming that he remains in detention at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, the human rights lawyer assured supporters that he was safe but expressed deep concern over how his case was handled by the authorities.

“I’m Safe and Sound, But Still in Custody”

Ejimakor revealed that he was remanded in custody after the Magistrate handling his case refused to consider his legal team’s submissions.

He wrote; “I am safe and sound but still under custody at Kuje prison. The Magistrate refused to listen to our submissions. He insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way.”

The lawyer expressed disappointment over the handling of the case, suggesting that the judicial process was influenced by external factors.

Alleged Court Manipulation

Ejimakor also alleged that the authorities deliberately chose to take him to a particular Magistrate court in Kuje, bypassing several other available courts within the city.

“For context: Keep in mind that they bypassed several Magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje,” he stated.

He claimed the move was not coincidental, arguing that it was a deliberate attempt to ensure his continued detention.

Arrest During #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest

The lawyer was arrested on Monday, along with several others, during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest organized by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore in Abuja.

The demonstration called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in custody for several years on charges bordering on treason.

Eyewitnesses reported that the protesters were peaceful until security operatives arrived and forcefully dispersed the crowd, arresting Ejimakor and others.
