“I’m an A student in engineering, Makinde is my junior in governance” — Umahi fires back

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has responded to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over the controversy surrounding the cost of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

Governor Makinde had criticised Umahi’s refusal to disclose detailed project costing during a TV appearance, suggesting a lack of transparency.

In his reaction, Umahi said Makinde’s comments were an insult, especially coming from someone he described as his “junior” in both governance and engineering.

Speaking during an inspection of the Abuja–Mararaba–Keffi road on Saturday, the minister explained that project cost per kilometre varies based on construction materials and terrain.

He described questions about a fixed figure as “mischievous” and insisted that such calculations can only be made after completion.

“I’m an A Student in Mathematics,” Umahi Boasts

The minister, known for his fiery responses, emphasised his academic background, saying he had always been a top student in mathematics and practical engineering.

He explained that the ongoing coastal road project, initially budgeted at N73 billion for 43 kilometres, had been extended to 45 kilometres to maximise available funds. Umahi said various construction methods from surface tracing to concrete naturally affect overall cost.

According to him, “When the project is completed, we’ll remove contingencies and calculate the real cost. That’s when the average cost per kilometre becomes meaningful. Until then, people shouldn’t mislead the public.”

Umahi challenges Makinde to public debate

In a bold remark, Umahi invited Governor Makinde to a public debate on engineering and road construction principles if he insists on challenging his explanations.

He noted that while Makinde specialises in electrical and electronics engineering, road construction demands a different level of technical knowledge.

Umahi stressed that he remains open to clarifying issues but warned against “ignorant commentary” that politicises technical matters.

“I have respect for Makinde as a brother and colleague, but he must withdraw his statement about me dancing around the issue. I’m his senior in governance and in engineering practice,” he stated firmly.
