The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has recorded another major victory in its anti-corruption drive with the conviction of two local government officials in Kebbi State for contract fraud and abuse of office involving ₦54 million.
The convicts — Mr. Abubakar Bawa Makuku, Sole Administrator and Caretaker Chairman of Sakaba Local Government Area, and Mr. Ahmed Abdullahi Fakai, Director of Finance and Supply — were arraigned before Justice E. Gakko of the Federal High Court, Birnin-Kebbi, on multiple charges of corruption, abuse of office, and financial misconduct.
Evidence presented by the ICPC prosecution team revealed that Mr. Fakai unlawfully withdrew ₦54 million from the council’s coffers in six tranches of ₦9 million each, while Mr. Makuku personally benefited from ₦10 million diverted from funds meant for official engagements.
Justice Gakko sentenced Fakai to three years’ imprisonment or a fine of ₦2.5 million, while Makuku received four years’ imprisonment or a fine of ₦2.5 million in total compensation and penalties.
ICPC spokesperson, Demola Bakare, said the conviction reinforces the Commission’s resolve to hold public officials accountable and promote integrity in governance.
