Ibadan Airport, Circular Road Set For Completion Soon — Oyo Deputy Governor

The Oyo State Deputy Governor, Abdulraheem Lawal, has announced that the upgrade of Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport is expected to be ready for aircraft takeoff and landing within the next two to three weeks.

Lawal also revealed that the ongoing construction of the  Circular Road is projected to be completed within two to three months. The Deputy Governor made these disclosures during inspection visits to both projects, describing them as legacy initiatives that reflect Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to infrastructure development and economic growth in the state.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, stating that assessments and expert opinions indicate the airport has reached approximately 75–76% completion. Key remaining tasks include runway marking, installation of the instrument landing system for night operations, and finishing works on the runway’s wings.

On the circular road, which spans about 32.5 km, Lawal highlighted the progress on hydraulic bridges, culverts, and civil engineering works. He emphasized that contractors are meeting specifications and deadlines and assured that the government would continue to engage and fund the projects to ensure timely delivery.

“We have legacy projects ongoing—the international airport and the Ibadan Circular Road. Both are set for completion by the end of this year. The airport is expected to be ready in the next month, while the Circular Road should be delivered in the next three months,” he said.

Responding to questions about whether the airport would be operational for travelers attending the Olubadan coronation event, Lawal stressed that the contractors would determine the facility’s readiness. Regular tests are being conducted to ensure the runway meets international standards.

The airport, renamed Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport and upgraded to international standards, was unveiled in 2024 with a budget of N41 billion. Completion is expected within 12 months.
