“I would be in charge” — Peter Obi reveals what he would do differently from Buhari if elected in 2027

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has said he would personally remain in charge of his administration if elected president in the 2027 election.

Obi made the statement while discussing the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and its handling of corruption during an interview.

The former Anambra State governor suggested that Buhari was unable to exercise sufficient control over his administration, saying he would take a different approach if given the opportunity to lead Nigeria.

Obi promises stronger control over government

Obi said, “He (Buhari) was not in charge. The difference is that I would be in charge.”

The presidential candidate also promised to tackle corruption, particularly in relation to fuel subsidy, which he identified as one of the major problems affecting the policy.

He said corruption, rather than the subsidy itself, was the central issue that needed to be addressed.

Obi added, “From day one, I talked about subsidy. Corruption is the problem with subsidy. I will remove the corruption and return the subsidy.”

Obi reiterates fuel subsidy position

The 2027 presidential hopeful further said his administration would restore the fuel subsidy if elected, while eliminating corruption associated with the system.

He argued that reducing corruption within the subsidy arrangement would significantly reduce the burden on the country.

Obi’s comments come as political parties and presidential hopefuls position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election, with governance, corruption and the cost of living expected to remain major campaign issues.
