In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, Usman Yusuf, former Executive Secretary of the NHIS, spoke candidly about ongoing political tensions and legal battles involving opposition figures, particularly former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.
During the interview, Yusuf stated, “I have known El-Rufai for 50 years; he studied quantity surveying, and I went into medicine.” He used the remark to emphasize the long-standing personal and academic relationship between himself and the former Kaduna State governor.
Yusuf explained that their relationship dates back to their early years in higher education, where they both began their academic journeys before branching into different professional paths. According to him, while El-Rufai pursued quantity surveying and later ventured into public service and politics, he himself chose the medical field, eventually building a career in hematology and oncology.
He noted that despite their long history, he has maintained an independent stance on political matters, at times openly criticizing El-Rufai’s actions while in office. Yusuf stressed that personal familiarity should not override objectivity, especially when assessing leadership and governance.
The former NHIS boss also addressed the controversies surrounding El-Rufai, arguing that public figures should be evaluated fairly and based on evidence rather than political sentiment. He reiterated the importance of due process, insisting that allegations must be tested in court and not in the court of public opinion.
Yusuf further highlighted concerns about the broader political environment, warning that increasing tensions and perceived targeting of opposition figures could weaken democratic institutions if left unchecked. He called for restraint, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law.
He concluded by urging political leaders to focus on national unity and institutional integrity, noting that Nigeria’s progress depends on justice, transparency, and the ability of its leaders to rise above partisan interests.
