The save Nigeria democracy message echoed loudly on Tuesday as the new Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, Tanimu Turaki, renewed his appeal to President Donald Trump and world leaders to help save Nigeria democracy, insisting that the current political tension demands urgent attention to save Nigeria democracy.
Turaki said the internal crisis rocking the PDP shows how deep the threats have become, stressing again that only strong global intervention can save Nigeria democracy.
He warned that the situation must not be ignored by partners who care about efforts to save Nigeria democracy.
Turaki warns that democracy is slipping
The chairman spoke while reacting to the chaos that followed the police takeover of the PDP national headquarters in Abuja.
The development worsened the feud between factions loyal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and supporters of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who clashed at the Wadata Plaza.
Turaki said Nigeria was facing more than insecurity and religious attacks, adding that the system of governance itself was in danger.
Appeal to Trump and global powers
He appealed to the former United States President, Donald Trump, urging him to take notice of the growing tension.
He said: “I want to call on President Trump, what is at stakes, is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians, you should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat. I’m calling on all other develop nations, all advance democracies, come and save Nigeria.”
Turaki accused Wike of allegedly leading armed thugs with the support of police officers to create confusion at the PDP secretariat.
He claimed that such actions represent clear attempts to intimidate party members and weaken democratic structures.
‘We are ready to defend this mandate’
Speaking to journalists after the clash, the PDP chairman insisted that his faction would resist any attempt to undermine democratic values.
He maintained that they would continue to push for fairness, justice, and protection of their mandate.
He said, “I have said it before, we are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, to protect our democracy and to protect our mandate.”
Turaki called on the international community to monitor the situation closely and intervene where necessary, saying the political climate in Nigeria demands urgent support from allies across the world.
