Important Notes
What Is a Tax Identification Number (Tax ID)?
A Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) is a unique identification number jointly issued by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) in accordance with Nigerian tax laws. It is used to identify individuals and entities for tax administration, compliance, and enforcement.
Under Nigeria’s tax administration framework, a Tax ID is not created in isolation. It is derived from and directly linked to officially recognised foundational identity systems, including:
-
National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for individuals
-
Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration records for companies, business names, partnerships, and incorporated trustees
-
Other legally recognised identity records for non-residents and special entities
This linkage ensures that every Tax ID corresponds to a verified legal identity, improving accuracy, integrity, and trust across Nigeria’s tax system.
Investors king’s Note
Obtaining a Tax Identification Number in Nigeria is now a straightforward digital process tied to existing national and corporate records.
Individuals must use their NIN, while businesses must use their CAC registration number. Securing a Tax ID early ensures smooth compliance and reduces the risk of future regulatory issues.
