How Sanwo-Olu Positioned Lagos as a Year-Round Global Cultural Destination

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has disclosed that Lagos’ rise as a global hub for tourism, entertainment, and creative enterprise was not accidental, but the result of deliberate policy choices made from the first day of his administration.

In an interview with Thisday Style, the governor revealed that entertainment and tourism were embedded in the state’s development blueprint through the THEMES agenda—now expanded to THEMES Plus—with a specific focus on unlocking the economic potential of culture, arts, and hospitality.

“From day one, we were intentional,” he said, noting that tourism was the first ministry under his administration to have three commissioners, underscoring its strategic importance.

Sanwo-Olu explained that the government engaged stakeholders across music, fashion, film, and the arts to position itself as an enabler rather than a regulator. On tourism, he said efforts extended to improving hotel infrastructure, airport experiences, restaurant culture, and visitor entry processes.

He described the global attention drawn by Lagos’ “Detty December” festivities as an opportunity that must be expanded beyond a single season. According to him, the state is working on calendarising events throughout the year, including Easter activities, mid-year conferences, exhibitions, and training programmes.

“Lagos must be a destination all year round,” the governor said, adding that the government now supports international conferences and large group visits by facilitating visas and working closely with immigration authorities.

Sanwo-Olu also highlighted Lagos’ successful hosting of the E1 electric powerboat racing championship as a milestone in the city’s global branding. He said Lagos outperformed expectations in 2025, dispelling security concerns and showcasing its capacity to host world-class sporting events.

The E1 agreement, he confirmed, will keep the event in Lagos for at least the next three years, further strengthening the city’s international profile.
