A Nigerian man has shared a deeply personal story alleging that a current commissioner in Osun State once defrauded his father in the 1990s, subjecting the family to abject poverty.
In a lengthy thread, an X user, @Row_Haastrup, narrated how his father, who had worked with a German computer company and was well-respected in his role, decided to go into private business.
With a settlement of ₦350,000 after resigning in 1995, his father invested everything into a deal facilitated by the said commissioner, who claimed he could source and import products from abroad.
According to him, the man disappeared shortly after collecting the money, vanishing to Côte d’Ivoire.
From comfort to abject poverty
“My dad worked with a German company that deals with computers. Life was good, his bosses liked him. He understood the business & felt it’s something he could do having learnt the ropes & all with regards to the go-to-market strategy & developing corporate partnerships.
“He decided it was time to go solo & build from there. 350k was going to be his settlement. He never drinks, smoke & had a very strong heart to only always do right. Infact, this was the reason we left CAC in 1991 cos of some misappropriations & then we joined DeeperLife after some members evangelized to my parents.
“He resigned in 1995 but before then, he met this man who happens to be from same state, Osun, not sure if from same home town & knows how to bring in these products from abroad – that part of the business, my dad wasn’t familiar with as such.
“My dad invested ALL of the money, & this man left with the hope of coming back with the products. Certain details I’m not privy to as regards arrangements on sourcing, etc. 1 week turned to 2 weeks, to 1 month & then we started panicking. At this point, my dad knew he has been duped.
“My grand uncle was a commissioner of police in Ondo state then; force HQ had been informed, interpol informed – the only thing that came out of it was that he left Nigeria for Cote D’Ivoire & disappeared ever since.
“Don’t let me describe the kind of poverty we faced cos it’s not what I pray for my enemy. My mom was just a LASG primary school teacher who lived on just about N1,000, until Obasanjo came in increased teachers salary to about 9k or so in 1999. Even at that, it was horrible.
“Today, that man is a Commissioner in Osun state. When my dad told me last year, I almost wanted to run mad. That man stole the future we could have had as a family. That man made sure we experienced shame, ridicule & reproach cos he was greedy & a thief.
“The only reason I’m not mentioning his name is cos my dad met him & had forgiven him. My dad is a Deeperlife pastor & has chosen to take that path of forgiveness. Mentioning his name might hurt my dad. He is at peace now.
He is proud that despite all that had happened, he was able to train his boys & we are all doing well.
“Truth is that you don’t know what life will throw at you but our prayers is that the number of our victories is the number of our battles, not less.”
