The Acting President of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN), Zara Kwaghe, has announced that the Society is set to celebrate its 70th Congress alongside the 6th Congress of the Association of African Historians.
Speaking at a pre-70th conference and anniversary media briefing in Abuja on Friday, Kwaghe said the event marks a major milestone in the Society’s commitment to preserving and promoting Nigeria’s historical and cultural heritage.
She noted that the celebration, themed “70 Years of Resilience: Honouring Nigeria’s Past, Envisioning its Future,” will spotlight the Society’s contributions to scholarship and nation-building.
According to her, “The conference will bring together distinguished historians and scholars from across Africa to share research, insights, and perspectives on the future of historical scholarship on the continent.”
The event, which opens on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Army Headquarters Command Mess 1, Asokoro, Abuja, will feature the prestigious Dike Memorial Lecture to be delivered by Emeritus Professor Bahru Zewde Woldehana from Ethiopia.
Highlights include plenary sessions, the Gala and Award Night on October 16, and the attendance of dignitaries such as Prof. Emeritus Ibrahim Gambari, Gen. Dr. Yakubu Gowon, Lt. Gen. T.Y. Buratai, and other eminent personalities.
