The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across Nigeria from Monday, September 15, to Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
According to the agency’s weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states on Monday morning.
In the afternoon and evening, northern states will continue to experience isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall.
Flash floods are likely in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe. The central region is expected to have a cloudy morning with sunshine intervals and moderate rains over Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the FCT, and Benue. Later in the day, thunderstorms are forecast over most central areas.
The southern region will see cloudy skies with moderate rainfall in Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River in the morning, with widespread moderate rains later in the day.
Tuesday and Wednesday forecast
On Tuesday, northern states including Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa will experience isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains.
Later, thunderstorms are expected over Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Taraba. Central states will see moderate rainfall over Kogi, Niger, FCT, Kwara, and Nasarawa, while southern states including Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Delta will experience light to moderate rainfall later in the day.
Wednesday’s forecast shows cloudy skies with sunshine intervals over the north, with slim chances of light rain in Sokoto and Zamfara, while thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected later in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto. Central and southern regions will have light to moderate rains, especially in the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Benue, and Delta states.
Safety precautions and advisory
NiMet advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall and urged farmers not to apply fertiliser or pesticides immediately before rain to prevent nutrient leaching.
Residents are advised to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances, and avoid tall trees to reduce storm-related risks. Airline operators are encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather updates for planning purposes.
