A UK-based Nigerian man has narrated how his friend’s relationship with his elder brother reportedly turned sour after he returned to Nigeria following four years in the United Kingdom (UK).
In a post shared on TikTok, he explained that his friend travelled to the UK on a student visa, later obtained a post-study visa but could not secure a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS). Rather than remain illegally, he returned to Nigeria with $15,000.
While abroad, he reportedly paid the school fees of his elder brother’s two children, completed the family house and handled the interior work.
In his words, he said:
“He was paying his brother’s children’s school fees. The family house wasn’t completely built, so he finished it and did all the interior. When he came back to Nigeria, he couldn’t continue paying because he was also struggling to get back on his feet.”
He made his brother understand that he was the one paying the school fees when he was over there. But his brother started saying that instead of focusing on his life in the UK, he was showing off and doing things he wasn’t capable of.”
The narrator said his friend’s brother began treating him like an enemy after the payments stopped, accusing him of focusing on others instead of building his own life.
The story has sparked reactions online, with many discussing the pressure of supporting family while trying to secure one’s own future.
He urged people in Nigeria and the diaspora to know their limits when helping others, noting that sacrifices made for family may not always be appreciated when circumstances change.
