Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) Plc reported a N119.55 billion loss in other comprehensive income for the nine months ended September 2026, compared with a gain of N50.74 billion in the corresponding period of 2025.
The N170.29 billion deterioration was partly driven by adverse foreign currency translation movements, reflecting the impact of exchange rate changes on the group’s financial reporting.
According to GTCO’s unaudited financial statements, total comprehensive income declined by 34% to N495.03 billion from N750.38 billion in the corresponding period of 2025.
The decline was significantly steeper than the 12.2% reduction in profit after tax, which fell to N614.57 billion from N699.64 billion.
Other comprehensive income captures certain gains and losses that accounting standards require companies to recognise outside their conventional profit or loss statements.
For financial institutions with operations across multiple countries, these adjustments can include exchange differences arising from translating the financial statements of foreign subsidiaries into the group’s reporting currency.
Such movements can affect reported comprehensive income and shareholders’ equity without necessarily representing immediate cash losses.
GTCO operates banking and financial services businesses across Nigeria and several other African markets, making its consolidated financial statements sensitive to exchange rate movements in the countries where it operates.
The negative adjustment in 2026 contrasted with the positive contribution recorded in the previous year, widening the decline in the group’s overall comprehensive earnings.
While profit after tax fell by N85.07 billion, total comprehensive income declined by N255.35 billion, reflecting the additional impact of items recognised outside profit or loss.
The group’s underlying earnings also came under pressure from higher taxation and financing costs.
Profit before tax declined by 2.3% to N879.90 billion from N900.80 billion, while income tax expenses increased by 31.9% to N265.32 billion.
Interest expenses rose by 27.7% to N356 billion from N278.73 billion, contributing to a decline in net interest income to N935.88 billion from N952.14 billion.
Despite these pressures, GTCO remained profitable, with earnings attributable to shareholders continuing to support its financial position.
The other comprehensive loss, however, highlights the importance of looking beyond profit after tax when assessing the financial performance of banking groups with international operations.
Although the N119.55 billion negative adjustment reduced total comprehensive income, it should not be interpreted as a separate operating loss or an equivalent cash outflow.
For shareholders, the development illustrates how currency translation adjustments and other valuation movements can affect the group’s reported financial position even when its core operations remain profitable.
