Rev.Fr.Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Executive Governor of Benue State, is a transformative leader, scholar, and humanitarian whose emergence in public office has redefined governance in the North Central region.
A respected Catholic priest with decades of pastoral devotion, he assumed office on May 29, 2023, bringing to the State House an uncommon blend of moral discipline, intellectual depth, and a profound commitment to human welfare.
Governor Alia is honoured as Governor of the Year (International Cooperation & Development) for his exceptional success in restoring global confidence in Benue State and leveraging high-level partnerships to accelerate development. Upon assuming office, he inherited a state with strained donor relations; however, through strategic diplomatic engagement, he has successfully rebuilt trust and reopened critical channels of cooperation.
His administration has attracted robust multi-sector support from global institutions, including the United Nations, USAID, FAO, and the EU. These partnerships are currently driving vital reforms in agriculture, health, and security, directly improving service delivery in communities affected by displacement. His ability to harmonize state resources with international aid has positioned Benue as a model for donor-driven development recovery.
Born on May 14, 1966, in Mbangur, Vandeikya LGA, Governor Alia’s path to leadership is rooted in rigorous education and service. He holds a Master’s in Religious Education (Fordham University), a Master’s in Biomedical Ethics, and a Doctorate from Duquesne University, USA.
Before his landslide victory in 2023, he built a distinguished reputation as a healer and advocate for the vulnerable. His pastoral career spans parishes in Nigeria and leadership roles in the US, including Director of Pastoral Services at Catholic Health Services, Florida, and Chaplaincy roles in Pittsburgh and New York. These global experiences equipped him with the cross-cultural administrative skills he now utilizes to steer Benue State toward sustainable growth and security.
