Give Us A Good Christian, Amupitan Cannot Be A Good Referee In A Contest Involving Muslims—MURIC

According to a report by Leadership, on Thursday March 5, 2026, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has stated that its call for a new leader of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is not based on religion, stating that it only wants a neutral person to lead the electoral body.

‎The group said it wants a replacement it considers fair to all Nigerians, it said the new INEC chairman should be someone without bias against any group.

‎MURIC suggested that the position should be given to a good Christian who respects Muslim citizens, the organisation said such a person should not have any negative feelings toward Muslims.

‎The group criticised the current INEC chairman, Joash Amupitan, MURIC said Amupitan cannot act as a fair referee in elections involving Muslims.

‎The organisation claimed that Amupitan once supported actions it described as harmful to Nigerian Muslims, it said he allegedly invited foreign involvement in matters linked to protecting Christians in Nigeria.

‎MURIC argued that this raised concerns about neutrality, the group said many qualified Christians in Nigeria could handle the INEC job well, it said such leaders would not show bias against Muslims.

‎MURIC reminded the public that Christians have previously led INEC without complaints from Muslim groups, the organisation said this shows that religious background alone is not the issue.

‎The group insisted that the most important requirement is fairness, it said the electoral body must be trusted by all Nigerians.

‎“Give us a good Christian. Amupitan cannot be a good referee in a contest involving Muslims after inviting US to come and deal with Muslims in the process of protecting Nigerian Christians,” they said.See_More…
