President Bola Tinubu has stated that Abia State and other parts of Nigeria are reaping significant benefits from the removal of the fuel subsidy, noting that the policy has enabled state governments to execute critical development projects.
Tinubu made the remark on Friday during a one-day official visit to Abia State, where he was represented by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
The president had ended Nigeria’s longstanding petrol subsidy with his inauguration declaration on May 29, 2023, saying, “Subsidy is gone.” The move faced criticism from some Nigerians who argued that sufficient measures to mitigate its impact were not implemented.
Speaking at the event, which included the commissioning of several projects such as the newly remodeled Dr. Michael Okpara Auditorium and completed road projects, Umahi said Tinubu’s policy is beginning to show positive outcomes.
“The removal of the fuel subsidy is gaining momentum for projects, and we are beginning to see the benefits here in Abia State,” Umahi said.
“The same progress is being experienced in other states across Nigeria. I am committed to working with your governor to ensure that Abia State fully reclaims its potential,” he added.
